WordPress Thursday, Mar 6 2008

The article is about wordpress becoming a social networker. When i think of social networking I think of facebook- a cite I can use to meet people and stay in touch. I think wordpress could become a social network. One of the best things about facebook is being able to write on friend’s walls. WordPress as a social network would not be that different. You could use it to write between friends and meet others.

Facebook fatigue Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

The article is about the level of use of facebook in the U.S. It showed a decline in facebook users. I agree that I use facebook a lot less then I used to. I used to check it daily- but now I only check it if I get an e-mail that I received a message or to add pictures. Every time I get on it seems like I have done of application requests and advertisements and it annoys me so I’ve changed from using facebook as a daily means of staying in touch with old friends and now use it only when i have an exact agenda or a ton of free time.  I got really annoyed when I tried to see which Sex and the City character I am and had to invite all my friends to see my results- my friends don’t want that.

Facebook used to be a way for college students to stay in touch with high school friends, meet new ones with similar interests, share photos and help remember  the names of all the people you meet freshman year. Now its flooded with advertisements and obnoxious.

ipod crime Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article says ipods are to blame for an increase in crime rate and argues that the ease of reselling ipods makes them good targetes for crime and the increase in the crime rate can be due in part to ipods.  I cna understand part of their arguement, but think it leaves a lot of assuming and doesn’t take into other things that may influence the crime rate.  It doesn’t take in account economic factors like unemployment rate and minimum wage- more unemployed or lower paid people could also increease the crim rate.

I do think the article makes a very good point that it would be nice if ipod could find a way to protect ipods from theft. It wold be nice if you could turn on an option that would allow you to lock your ipod if you were leaving it unattended for a long period of time like when getting coffee at the library you could lock it and have to click in some code when you come back. If somehow you forgot the code it would be cool if it could unlock when you block the ipod into the computer that has the identical playlist- your laptop.

Flickr Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article is about the downfalls of Flickr and how a company named PhotoShelter is helping to solve one of the problems people have with their pictures being used of flickr and photographers not granting permission or receiving credit. I think its great that Photoshelter is offering an option for flcikr users to have their photos protected.

The people worked hard to take and post these pictures and deserve credit where credit is due.  This article points out how user generated content can have some negatives. People want their pictures out there, but they also want them protected and credited. I think its great that hey internet offers an option for people who just enjoy taking pictures to share them with others and this option offers people a way to control what everyone has access to. Its good for flickr that photoshelter is doing this because flcikr users might stop using flcikr if they felt their photos weren’t protected like they wanted them to be.

Politics and computers Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

The article examines Obama as a Mac and Hilary as a PC. This si something I never thought of when listening to debates and thinking about politics. It shows how connected our world is to technology and how so many think of us think in terms of technology and communication outlets. I honestly don’t know much about the difference between a Mac and PC and I think the article was trying to point out that you have to look really carefully at each candidate to find their differences, and they are subtle and might only be realized by a few people.

Facebook and MP3 Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

The article about sharing MP3s with your friends through facebook is very interesting for our generation who uses facebook multiple times a day. The company double twist figured out how to only let you share music you bought are entitled to have on your itunes in an attempt to not let you share music you own illegally. I think this a good application for facebook because we already use it so often it makes sense to have our musci on there too. You can see what friends are listening too and expand your own music tastes.

Wall Street Journal & Facebook Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article shows how newspapers realize they have to tap into social networking in order to save their dying business. Print journalism is on its way out and the WSJ is adapting and is now on facebook. Facebook users can see what thier friends are reading, not just what the general public reads.

Its like combing tagging articles, facebook and WSJ- you can see what everyone else likes and it opens the WSJ to a whole new world of users- the young gneration on facebook. I applaud WSJ for staying current and trying to save the newspaper business.

Starbucks Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article tells people to read business articles cynically and that Starbucks is using a gimmick to take people’s money. Starbucks is a business- they want to make money and their marketing department comes up with something that makes money so people get mad. For a cute coffee house find a local one- not Starbucks. Starbucks is a chain that wants to make money- let it go and buy your coffee somewhere else if you have a problem with them, but don’t hate on thier marketing team.

Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article shows a different side of the Microsoft buying Yahoo- a positive one. While many argue that if Microsoft did buy yahoo it would decrease competition ,but this article argues it would encourage competition where Google is usually dominant. I think this article did a great job showing other side of the potential purchase. It made me think about the postives- like better service and other long run gains.

Microsoft-Yahoo: Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid, Google Says Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

This article was about the microsoft-yahoo relationship. It shows that Microsoft is trying to stay up on the technology curve. Google is worried about the deal and is suddenly befriending Yahoo. Everything is related in the technology world and people are always trying to stay ahead. Microsoft has realized it is on the verge of falling behind and doesn’t want to let that happen.
